Configure BigCountryMail.com on your Outlook 2007

You may setup an account within Outlook using either IMAP or POP3.

IMAP is a protocol that keeps all messages and folders on the server. Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your SmarterMail mailbox and your email client(s). This means when you log in to the BigCountryMail.com Web interface, actions you performed on email clients and mobile devices will automatically appear in the Web interface (and vice versa).

With POP3, your mail is saved in a mailbox on the remote server until you check your mail. When you check your mail, all of the mail is downloaded to your computer and is no longer maintained on the server. If you use POP3 and are traveling or check your mail from multiple locations, you will not be able to view any of your old mail because the messages only exist on the computer on which you originally received your mail. NOTE: If you have enabled Outlook to keep messages on the server, you will be able to access your messages and folders from any computer via the BigCountryMail.com Web interface or your mobile device.

Follow these steps to create an Outlook 2007 POP3 or IMAP account:

  1. In Outlook, go to Tools and Account Settings. Below the Email tab click New.
  2. Choose the email service you wish to configure: POP3 or IMAP.
  3. Select the manually configure server settings or additional server types check box. This will automatically enter in all of the required fields.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click the Internet Email bubble.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter the following information:
    • Your Name: This is the display you want to use, such as Joe Smith.
    • Email Address: This is your full email address, such as username@BigCountryMail.com.
    • Incoming Server: mail.bigcountrymail.com.
    • Outgoing Mail Server: mail.bigcountrymail.com.
    • Username: This is your full email address, such as username@BigCountryMail.com.
    • Password: This is your email account password.
  8. Select mail server requires SMTP authentication.
    • Click More Settings.
    • Navigate to the Outgoing Server tab
    • Select the My Outgoing Server requires SMTP Authentication check-box.
    • Click OK.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click Finish.

Configure BigCountryMail.com on your MAC Computer

IMAP is a protocol that keeps all messages and folders on the server. Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your SmarterMail mailbox and your email client(s). This means when you log in to the SmarterMail Web interface, actions you performed on email clients and mobile devices will automatically appear in the Web interface (and vice versa). IMPORTANT: It is recommended that you avoid putting sub-folders under your In-box as IMAP synchronization with most email clients is unreliable. This is a limitation of mail clients and NOT BigCountryMail.com. While the BigCountryMail.com web interface does allow you to create folders in your in-box, realize that those folders may not appear in your email client.

Follow these steps to set up Apple Mail to sync with BigCountryMail.com via IMAP :

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences.
  2. Click Internet Accounts.
  3. Click Add Other Account...
  4. Select Add a Mail account and click Create
  5. Complete the display name, full email address and password fields.
  6. Click Create.
  7. Type https://mail.bigcountrymail.com. as the root URL to your BigCountryMail.com web-mail.
  8. Click Next.
  9. For the Incoming Mail Server options select the IMAP for account type. Complete the required filed :
  10. Incoming Mail Server: mail.bigcountrymail.com.
  11. User name (full email address), and Password
  12. Click Continue
  13. If you receive a message stating "cannot send your password securely to the server" click Continue
  14. For the Outgoing Mail server options fill in the required files:
  15. Outlook Mail server: mail.bigcountrymail.com.
  16. Server requires SMTP authentication click Use Authentication and fill in with full email address and password
  17. Click Continue
  18. You will see an account summary page and now click Create

Mac Mail is now set up to send and receive emails using IMAP.

Synchronize BigCountryMail.com with Outlook Using the Add to Outlook Feature

BigCountryMail.com supports the two-way sync of personal and shared user resources like calendars, contacts, and tasks with Outlook 2007 and above using Add to Outlook (Share-point Sync). Add to Outlook does not, however, sync domain resources like shared calendars and contacts. Although the steps below show you how to sync your BigCountryMail.com calendar with Outlook, the procedure is similar for synchronizing contacts and tasks.

NOTE: Share-point Sync does not support notification features, so items like BigCountryMail.com calendar reminders will not be available within Outlook. For full integration, Microsoft Exchange Active Sync (for mobile devices and Outlook 13 and above for Windows) or Microsoft Exchange Web Services (for Outlook for Mac and Apple Mail) should be used. Active Sync is available at additional cost. Call us for pricing.

Follow these steps to sync your SmarterMail calendar with Outlook from the Web interface:

  1. From your computer that has Microsoft Outlook installed, log in to the BigCountryMail.com web interface.
  2. Click the Calendar icon.
  3. Click the Actions menu and then Add to Outlook in the navigation pane tool-bar.
  4. This will open a new window that contains details about the connection you are about to make with Outlook. You may keep the default description and display names or type your own in the appropriate fields.
  5. Click OK.
  6. This will open the 'Launch Application' window. Click OK to launch Outlook.
  7. To allow SmarterMail to connect with Outlook, click Yes.

Your BigCountryMail.com and Outlook calendars are now synchronized and any changes you make to the calendars will be updated in real time.

Slow Send and Receive with Outlook 2010 and IMAP

When using Outlook 2010 and IMAP, users may experience slow sending and receiving or are not able to send and receive at all. This can be caused by Outlook pulling folder count for sub folders. This can especially affect users who have multiple sub-folders with multiple emails in them.

For Microsoft Outlook 2010 follow the steps below:

  1. Go to "File -> Options"
  2. Select "Advanced"
  3. Click the "Send/Recieve..." button under the "Send and receive" section
  4. Select the "All Accounts" group and click the "Edit..." button
  5. Uncheck "Get folder unread count for subscribed folders"
  6. Select "Use the custom behavior defined below" option are under "Receive mail items"
  7. In the "Select folders from the selected account to include in send/receive" box, check any folders that automatically receive mail. This would include in-box and any others folders that may have content filters that automatically deliver new messages to them.
  8. Close Outlook and re-open
  9. Mail should now send and receive.
